Virginia cannabis regulators propose more “limits” on hemp products.
This has been a tough week for Virginia’s hemp industry. First, a federal judge disagreed with the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against a new state law that, among other things, limits hemp products to 2 mg THC per package.
Now, the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority has released a report that provides several recommendations for further legislation to regulate hemp products.
“Virginia has made significant regulatory changes to address the challenges presented by consumable hemp products. An examination of other states’ efforts to limit the risks associated with consumable hemp products reveals other regulatory strategies for Virginia to consider as it explores additional methods to bring this difficult problem under control,” the executive summary reads.
Some of the recommendations:
1) “imposing robust contaminant testing requirements for all consumable hemp products”
2) “requiring ingredient limits on consumable hemp products and implementing a preapproval process for consumable hemp products
3) “addressing access by minors to consumable hemp products at retail locations and through online sales”
4) “imposing further limits on online sales of consumable hemp products”
Cannabis reform advocates on both sides of the political spectrum pen letter to Biden.
One year ago this month, Cannabis Wire wrote about the unlikely alliance of two groups: the Marijuana Justice Coalition and the Cannabis Freedom Alliance. In shorthand, the first group is more aligned with Democrats while the second is with Republicans. And, we noted that the person at the center of the union was Justin Strekal, formerly of NORML and now of Better Organizing to Win Legalization (BOWL).
Now, Strekal is at it again, working with the Coalition and the Alliance on a joint letter calling for the end of federal cannabis prohibition.
“We sincerely request that you oppose merely rescheduling cannabis under the CSA and instead urge you to deschedule the substance entirely, allowing state-based regulatory programs to function as intended without unnecessary federal interference,” the groups wrote.
“We further urge you to use your influence to encourage Congress to pass comprehensive marijuana descheduling legislation that includes a well-thought-out plan for reasonable federal regulation and for implementing interstate commerce that protects public health and the ability for small businesses to thrive in the emerging legal marketplace.”
Clinical trial shows CBD’s promise for sleep issues.
A team of researchers led by the University of Northern Colorado conducted a randomized clinical trial that aimed to “investigate the effects of 8 weeks of 50 mg oral CBD on mental health, sleep quantity and quality, and immune cell function in healthy, college-aged individuals.”
The group that received CBD “experienced significant improvements in sleep quality measured objectively using a sleep questionnaire.”
This study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrients.
